Hudson River Museum - Small Slice of a Big History
Yonkers, NY apartments
New York is a state built along its waterways. It's a state that came up from the hands of those who made the great leap "across the pond", and it's also a state whose trade and industry is indebted to its watery passages. Yonkers was once designated as New York's "Sixth Borough", but ultimately retained its status as an independent city. To this day, Yonkers bears testimony to its colorful heritage, and the Hudson River Museum is one its proudest communicators.
For anyone who has the good fortune to live in Yonkers, it's a wonderful place for a day visit. Hosting a balance of permanent and rotating exhibits, the Hudson River Museum has most recently opened its "Industrial Sublime: Modernism and the Transformation of New York's Rivers", 1900-1940 gallery.
Having opened this October and running through mid-January 2014, the newest Hudson River exhibit traces the area's remarkable transformation from a pastoral region into a bustling and lively industrial center. However, the exhibit places a special emphasis on the Hudson River area's growing development on the style and themes of local artists. As the Hudson River Museum website outlines, the showing contains over 60 borrowed paintings from galleries ranging from the Guggenheim to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
It's one thing to record history through video or daguerreotype, but it's a whole other experience to capture its essence through the painted canvas. So go ahead and catch the masterworks while they're still in town.
