Terracotta
Warriors and Horses is a form of funerary art that belongs to mausoleum of
Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of Din Dynasty. It is buried 1500
meters east of the Emperor’s Mausoleum in purpose of protecting Emperor Qin Shi
Huang in his afterlife. The terracotta figures here are all created in the size
of the real soldiers, horses, and chariots. Some of them are even larger than
the real ones. The excavated three pits cover a total area of more than 22 000
square meters and nearly 8 000 life sized terracotta figures were discovered.
Emperor Qin Shi
Huang (259-210BC) has Ying as his family name and Zheng as his given name. Ying
Zheng ascended the throne of Qin Kingdom when he was 13 years old and he finally
unified the other six kingdoms when he was 39 and built Qin Dynasty, opening
the history of feudal society that lasted over 2000 years in China . First Emperor of Qin Dynasty
named himself Shi Huang in the hope that his later generations be the second,
the third, and even the thousandth emperor of the Qin Dynasty in a hereditary
order. In the order of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, work on his mausoleum began in
246BC soon after he ascended the throne of the Qin Kingdom .
And the mausoleum was not finished until he passed away in 210BC. According to
history record, the project eventually involved 700,000 workers. The Terracotta
Warriors and Horses is made and buried to guard the mausoleum of the Emperor.
